Before a mobile ultrasound visit, prepare a safe, private space where the clinician can position the patient and use portable equipment.
Access information
When booking, provide the full address and postcode. Add useful instructions about:
- parking or loading restrictions;
- entry codes, reception desks or gated access;
- stairs, lifts and narrow doorways;
- the correct care-home unit or workplace contact;
- infection-control procedures; and
- any time-limited access arrangements.
Make sure someone is available to provide entry at the appointment time. Secure pets away from the working area before the clinician arrives.
Space and privacy
Choose a clean, comfortably lit room with enough space beside a suitable bed or couch. Remove trip hazards and unnecessary furniture, but do not attempt lifting or moving that could cause injury.
The patient may need to adjust clothing or change position, so the room should offer reasonable privacy. Reduce avoidable interruptions and let other people present know that the clinician will confirm who the patient wants in the room.
Mobility and communication
Tell the team in advance if the patient needs help with positioning, has limited mobility, uses specialist equipment, needs information in another format, or will be supported by a carer or interpreter. Advance notice gives the team the best opportunity to discuss a reasonable adjustment.
Clinical staff cannot provide unsafe manual handling or work in an unsuitable environment. If you are unsure whether the location will work, contact the team before booking or before the visit.
A final check
Before the appointment:
- review the scan-specific preparation instructions;
- confirm the address and contact telephone number;
- make access and parking information available;
- prepare a private, uncluttered space; and
- have requested referral information or earlier reports ready.
Requirements vary by examination and individual circumstances. Contact the mobile ultrasound team if you need help planning the visit.
