Good preparation can help the clinician obtain useful images, but there is no single instruction that applies to every ultrasound examination. Always follow the guidance for the exact scan you booked.
Why instructions vary
Different organs and structures are seen in different ways. Depending on the examination, you may be asked to:
- avoid food for a stated period;
- drink water and keep a comfortably full bladder;
- take usual medication unless specifically advised otherwise;
- remove jewellery from the area; or
- wear loose, two-piece clothing that allows access to the area being scanned.
Some scans need no special preparation. Do not copy instructions from another scan or from a general article.
Check these details in advance
Read the service page and booking confirmation as soon as you receive them. Confirm:
- the name of the examination;
- any food, drink or bladder instructions;
- whether a referral or previous report is needed;
- the mobile visit address and access notes; and
- how to contact the team if an instruction is difficult to follow.
Tell the team about diabetes, fluid restrictions, mobility needs, allergies or another condition that may affect preparation. Do not stop prescribed medicine unless an appropriate healthcare professional has told you to do so.
On the day
Keep the area accessible and wear clothing that can be moved without unnecessary undressing. Have relevant referral documents or previous reports available if requested. If preparation has not gone as planned, tell the clinician honestly rather than trying to guess whether it matters.
If you are unwell, cannot attend or the visit location has changed, contact the team promptly so they can advise whether the appointment should continue.
This article is general information. Your scan-specific instructions and personalised clinical advice take priority.
